"One thing I ask of the Lord, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple."

No Other Gods Bible Study

Sweet Girlies,

    “No Other Gods, confronting our modern-day idols” by Kelly Minter is the selection for Life Journey’s Women summer bible study.

    Having completed two weeks of this study, perhaps we can honestly admit that Kelly has posed a number of things to seriously consider.  She has defined idols, referred to them as a “functional god” and titled them as our “personal pharaohs”, having “power” over us.  Ouch!  She has encouraged us to take the time to be introspective as we walk together with the goal of uprooting and eradicating those things that “steal, kill and destroy”.  We can MAKE ROOM in our hearts and lives so God can live supremely in our hearts.

    Day One of the second week was quite interesting.  A reason she posed for choosing an idol is because we, women, are caught in an endless pursuit to discover our identity.

     Consider the New Living Translation’ rendering of 1 Peter 2:9-12:

     “But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.”
 “Once you had no identity as a people;
    now you are God’s people.
Once you received no mercy;
    now you have received God’s mercy.”
“ Dear friends, I warn you as “temporary residents and foreigners” to keep away from worldly desires that wage war against your very souls.  Be careful to live properly among your unbelieving neighbors. Then even if they accuse you of doing wrong, they will see your honorable behavior, and they will give honor to God when he judges the world.”

     How do these verses speak to you?  What do they say to you?  What do they say about you?  Whose are you?

  1. Two lines in particular speak to me: "You can show others the goodness of God..." and "Be careful to live properly among your unbelieving neighbors...they will see your honorable behavior and give honor to God...."

    God has showm me that gossiping is NOT honorable! I recently fell into the trap of gossiping with an unbelieving relative. I am so thankful that I am HIS chosen possession and nothing can separate me from his love. I definitely want to reflect His light and love. Unbelievers are observing us!
